BHP Billiton chided for interfering in IP affairs

BHP Billiton, the Australian mining giant, got another slap on the face when the National Commission on the Indigenous Peoples-Davao Region lambasted it for what the agency termed as “purely interfering in the purely internal affairs of our IP (indigenous peoples) communities” in the areas in Mati City where the Pujada nickel project is located. Arroyo woos BHP Billiton

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is expected to make a formal pitch before BHP Billiton, the world’s largest mining company, to push ahead with its planned multi-billion dollar nickel project in the Philippines.

President Arroyo will hold formal talks with BHP Billiton officials on the sidelines of her state visit to Australia and New Zealand by the end of the month.

Chris Ward, vice president of the Australia-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce, said Billiton’s proposed nickel project in the Philippines could be among the talking points between Mrs. Arroyo and the company officials. [ full story]
